The hummingbird of the title （Il Colibrì in the original Italian） is the novel’s protagonist， Marco Carrera。 His nickname is given by his mother， due to a physical condition which keeps him considerably smaller and shorter than average for his age-group。 After an experimental treatment during his adolescence， Marco grows quickly and settles down to a more “normal” life， albeit one marked by several challenges and tragedies。 Throughout， Marco， like the bird to which he is compared， shows a marked The hummingbird of the title （Il Colibrì in the original Italian） is the novel’s protagonist， Marco Carrera。 His nickname is given by his mother， due to a physical condition which keeps him considerably smaller and shorter than average for his age-group。 After an experimental treatment during his adolescence， Marco grows quickly and settles down to a more “normal” life， albeit one marked by several challenges and tragedies。 Throughout， Marco， like the bird to which he is compared， shows a marked talent for staying still while everyone and everything around him changes。Veronesi gives us a life history of Marco and his family， against the backdrop of Italian contemporary events， from the sixties to the present， with a glimpse into an imaginary near future （the timeline of the novel ends with Marco’s death in 2029）。 This is an approach which， it seems to me， Italians are particularly good at， not only in the context of literature but also in movies。 Despite my very amateur knowledge of Italian cinema， I can name， off the cuff， several films which also opt for this sort of narrative。 Indeed， I found myself picturing The Hummingbird turned into a filmscript and started fantasizing about the actors I would choose for the cast of my imaginary film project。 A quick internet search revealed that， predictably， I was hardly the first to come up with this idea。 Veronesi’s book is already being turned into a movie by veteran director Francesca Archibugi， who has nicked some of the actors I had in mind。。。 What is original about the novel is its postmodern structure。 Passages in the third person alternate with letters， emails， lecture notes – even a furniture inventory and a list of science fiction volumes – to create a colourful and engaging mosaic。 Interwoven as a running thread is an account of Marco’s more-or-less platonic relationship with his first and greatest love， Luisa， recounted through a lifetime’s erratic correspondence。 I particularly liked the underlying humour – the therapist Carradori is a brilliant comedic creation， although he is also， quite surprisingly， a source of some of the wisest observations in the book。 So is Carrera’s friend “L’Innominabile” （“The Omen”） Duccio。 I was less convinced about the final parts of the book， for two reasons。 First of all， Veronesi introduces quasi-fabulist elements which mark a rather incongruous departure from the largely realist （if not always completely realistic） approach adopted in the earlier part of the novel。 I also felt the penultimate segment to be rather “manipulative”， uncomfortably hovering between sentiment and sentimentality， raising thorny ethical issues which are cursorily set aside in a wash of emotion。 Reservations aside， I believe that this is a worthy winner of the prestigious Premio Strega （Veronesi's second win， after his 2008 success with Caos Calmo）。 The English edition which is being issued by W&N marks an auspicious debut for Elena Pala – this is her first book-length translation， although you certainly wouldn’t realise that while reading her brilliant translation。 https://endsoftheword。blogspot。com/20。。。 。。。more

siente es con su hermano， y no entiende la razón del distanciamiento， pero intenta siempre el acercamiento。 Tampoco existe el futuro， puede hacer planes con Luisa， tejiendo una vida en común， pero es una realidad idealizada， ficticia， más por ella que por él， ella no es real， es una ilusión creada a través de las cartas y visitas esporádicas， Luisa dice: «¿No sabes que en eso consiste nuestro amor: en que yo nunca esté donde tú estás y tú nunca estés donde estoy yo？»。Por eso cuando coinciden en el entierro de la madre， se da cuenta que es una extraña， no es la mujer que reflejan las cartas。 6/ Es una persona optimista。 Se esfuerza por centrarse en los aspectos positivos y disfruta de los retos。 He ahí la escena de la partida de cartas cuando se reencuentra con el Innombrable。 No creo que haya mejor ejemplo。 7/ Se rodean de personas con una actitud positiva。 ¿Con quién？ Con su hija y su nieta。 El resto de los personajes son seres oscuros y falsos。 Y para no extenderme mucho más， descubriremos que Marco， saca fuerzas de flaquezas， buscará el lado cómico de la vida， es flexible ante los cambios y se adapta sin frustración ni rabia。 Pero estas personas rara vez son comprendidas por otros， los ven diferentes ante el lado amargo y las adversidades， y en lugar de aprender de ellos los critican con dureza。«Marco Carrera pasa la infancia sin darse cuenta de nada y solo por eso su infancia fue feliz»。 Pero esto no es cierto， eso es lo que ven desde fuera， porque no se paran a entender cómo piensa y siente Marco， y aquellos que dicen esto de él， que están tan pendientes de la realidad， son los que están ajenos a la vida familiar， sin embargo， Marco se da cuenta de todo， de su baja estatura， de la falta de amor de sus padres， incluso del sufrimiento de su hermana y evita la tragedia sin hablar， solo estando ahí。 Y me quedo con dos de muchas ideas:«La aversión era el mecanismo que había adoptado para defender el olvido»。Pero， sobre todo， esta:«Los deseos y los placeres nos ayudan a sobrevivir， pero los censuramos cuando atravesamos el duelo， cuando es precisamente lo que puede salvarnos。 No resuelve nuestros problemas， pero no los agravan y de momento nuestro cuerpo se libra de la dictadura del dolor， que quiere mortificarnos»。 De esta novela me quedo con el personaje principal， su lección de vida， su pensamiento y la reflexión que hace de cada pequeña pincelada。 Pero es cierto， que no me gustaron muchas cartas， ni los correos al hermano， ni algunos pasajes que me sacaban de la novela， pedazos de su cotidianidad que para mí no aportaban。 Me gusta la novela， pero considero， desde mi humilde opinión que hay que arañar mucho para entender a Morco y su entorno， o quizá no y yo compliqué mucho la lectura， que todo puede ser。 A month ago I was completely unaware that Florence was flooded in 1966， and that ‘mud angels’ worked tirelessly to rescue important works of art and literature。 Completely unintentionally， this is the second novel I’ve read this month that is not only set in Florence but also references that event （ the first being Still Life by Sarah Winman）。 I do wonder if my books are telling me something！ Maybe a little post COVID trip？This is a highly original novel that tells the story of the life of Marco A month ago I was completely unaware that Florence was flooded in 1966， and that ‘mud angels’ worked tirelessly to rescue important works of art and literature。 Completely unintentionally， this is the second novel I’ve read this month that is not only set in Florence but also references that event （ the first being Still Life by Sarah Winman）。 I do wonder if my books are telling me something！ Maybe a little post COVID trip？This is a highly original novel that tells the story of the life of Marco Carrera， the hummingbird， an ophthalmologist with a knack for staying still while the world around him moves。 Veronesi experiments with form and structure to create something thought provoking and unique。 The story is told through various forms; emails， letters， conversations， conference notes， traditional prose and even a household inventory。 This forces us to piece together the jigsaw of Marco’s life for ourselves。 The structure reinforces this。 The book begins in 1999， when， against all protocol， Marco Carreras wife’s psychotherapist warns him of her plan to do him in。 During this scene we learn about many of the key events that will be explained in more detail later。 The narrative then swings wildly from Marcos childhood in the 70s to his old age in the 2020s and every-when in between。 Few things happen in chronological order and as a result of this we find ourselves puzzling out the pieces to create a coherent narrative。 The effect is almost mosaic like。 By the end of the novel， we feel like we’re experts on Marco Carrera but， in fact， our impressions are pieced together through actually very few moments in his life， ranging from the earth-shattering to the mundane。 We’re given mere snippets of his life but from them we seem to learn so much。I do enjoy novels that span the entire life of a protagonist。 I tend to find them quite moving， and this was no different。 We watch as Marco faces trauma， deals with a love that was never meant to be and has a smattering of happiness thrown in。 It is a very human tale。 Overall， this is not a novel to choose if you’re looking for an action packed page turner but if you’re in the mood for a little existential angst and some quiet philosophical questioning， I would recommend this absorbing and original read。 。。。more

Quarto libro di Veronesi che leggo， che va a piazzarsi al secondo posto della mia personalissima classifica。 "Caos calmo" resta saldamente al primo posto， mentre scalano al terzo "Terre rare" e al quarto "XY"。Per quanto abbia trovato emozionante e， talvolta， commovente il volo del colibrì Marco Carrera， così come il suo affannarsi nel cercare di salvaguardare il corso della sua vita dagli inevitabili mutamenti del tempo， non ne sono rimasto toccato come credevo leggendo certi giudizi in rete。Pen Quarto libro di Veronesi che leggo， che va a piazzarsi al secondo posto della mia personalissima classifica。 "Caos calmo" resta saldamente al primo posto， mentre scalano al terzo "Terre rare" e al quarto "XY"。Per quanto abbia trovato emozionante e， talvolta， commovente il volo del colibrì Marco Carrera， così come il suo affannarsi nel cercare di salvaguardare il corso della sua vita dagli inevitabili mutamenti del tempo， non ne sono rimasto toccato come credevo leggendo certi giudizi in rete。Pensavo di avere tra le mani un capolavoro di rara bellezza， invece mi sbagliavo。Sicuramente un libro piacevole， che si lascia leggere più che volentieri， ma niente di memorabile。Forse per via del patchwork di frammenti， telefonate e missive， che saltano avanti e indietro nel tempo， più artificioso che funzionale alla storia， come in quei film in cui è il montaggio la vera marcia in più， e non la sceneggaitura o la regia。 E forse anche per l'eccessivo accanimento di sfighe e tragedie che si accaniscono sul protagonista， quasi da voler spingere ad ogni costo sul tasto del dolore e suscitare determinate emozioni in chi legge。 Un po' ricattatorio emotivamente， ecco。Scritta così， la mia recensione， sembra più negativa che positiva。 Eppure ho dato quattro stelle， perchè -come già scritto più sopra- il libro è scorrevole e si lascia leggere che è un piacere， e poi Marco Carrera è un personaggio dallo stoicismo commovente e ti viene solo da tifare per lui。 E poi ci sono pagine dense di riflessioni molto interessanti， come quelle su verità e libertà。In ultimo， ho apprezzato il making of in appendice， in cui Veronesi racconta spunti， citazioni e riferimenti alla base di questo suo ultimo libro。 Buona lettura！ 。。。more

1，5 ☆。 De verhalende stukken in het tweede deel zijn nog net aanvaardbaar。 Maar de brieven， sms verkeer en slecht geschreven conversaties die deze onderbreken zijn ronduit bedroevend。 Over het eerste deel van het boek valt er al helemaal niks goeds te zeggen。

Prachtig levensverhaal over een man wiens bijnaam de Kolibirie is。 Eerst omdat hij zo klein is als een vogeltje， later omdat hij jarenlang bewegingsloos lijkt te blijven terwijl het leven van anderen doorgaat en dat van hem van rampspoed doordrenkt wordt。 Ondanks dat laatste blijft het boek niet zwaar op je maag liggen maar fladdert het als het ware voorbij。

Premetto di aver letto il libro di Veronesi per pura curiosità， influenzata dal fatto che sul web se ne è parlato molto。 La storia di per sé risulta ai miei occhi già “letta”， nel senso che si narra della vicenda di Marco Carrera， della rovina della sua famiglia e dell’amore platonico che lo lega alla figura di Luisa。 Il romanzo si pone all’interno del filone realistico-familiare， senza però superarli， cito per esempio il grande classico dei Malavoglia o il contemporaneo Principe delle Maree di Premetto di aver letto il libro di Veronesi per pura curiosità， influenzata dal fatto che sul web se ne è parlato molto。 La storia di per sé risulta ai miei occhi già “letta”， nel senso che si narra della vicenda di Marco Carrera， della rovina della sua famiglia e dell’amore platonico che lo lega alla figura di Luisa。 Il romanzo si pone all’interno del filone realistico-familiare， senza però superarli， cito per esempio il grande classico dei Malavoglia o il contemporaneo Principe delle Maree di Pet Conroy （ 1986）， tra i miei libri preferiti in assoluto。La scrittura di Veronesi， a mio parere prolissa e meccanica， non mi ha entusiasmato， mentre ho apprezzato， invece， la storia non lineare e i continui salti temporali tra presente passato e futuro， insieme a una serie di citazioni che spaziano dalla musica al cinema， come il riferimento alla canzone ungherese Bloody Sunday e i film d’animazione di Tezuka。 A legare tra loro i personaggi vi sono lettere， dialoghi telefonici e piccole storie che si intersecano arricchendo in questo modo la prosa。 Il personaggio principale è Marco， affetto da ipoevolutismo è sottoposto ad una cura sperimentale per volere del Padre。 Grazie a questa crescerà nel giro di pochi mesi， per poi arrestarsi definitivamente。 Per via delle sue piccole fattezze e per la sua resilienza è denominato il Colibrì。 Marco è sostanzialmente un uomo che viene schiacciato dalla vita e che sembra essere trasportato da ciò che ne consegue。 Un uomo che non sceglie o agisce， ma resta immobile; eppure è proprio questo aspetto a permettergli di superare delusioni e lutti， riuscendo infine ad agire facendo la cosa giusta， almeno per una volta， decidendo di lasciare il gioco d'azzardo per dedicarsi a sua nipote。 Un punto a favore del romanzo è la delicatezza con cui certi argomenti sono stati trattati: l'avidità， il culto del denaro， i sentimenti scaturiti dalla perdita di una persona cara e la scelta dell'eutanasia da parte del protagonista。 Tuttavia avevo aspettative fin troppe alte per questo premio strega， di cui ho sentito tanto parlare， trovandolo spesso ridondante e banalotto。 。。。more
